Early Edo Period (1615 - 1867), 17th century
Two panel byobu, former fusuma: pigments on paper, 170.5 x 180 cm
The scene is set during the night under a soft moonlight, with two hares hidden in the pampas grass.
The hare, considered to be a nocturne animal, is traditionally linked with the moon where it is believed it lives.
